Most of them thought that the only organism that was included in the Fungi Kingdom was the mushroom. They discovered that mould and yeast are also living things included in this kingdom and that we can even eat them!
Mushrooms grow in autumn and spring, as they need humidity to grow, that’s why we say that they are seasonal. Some of our students haven’t ever seen a mushroom, so they were really interested in the lesson when they observed real mushrooms from the countryside, such as oyster mushrooms (known in Spanish as “setas de cardo”) and wild mushrooms (known in Spanish as “níscalos”, “setas de chopo” and “setas de pie violeta”). They could differentiate really well every single part in those mushrooms, as they had done a picture in their notebook previously, showing the different parts of them.
They also have learnt that they cannot collect the mushrooms that they want when they go to the countryside, as some of them are poisonous, as the Amanita Muscaria, and they can be deadly, so they have to be really careful and study the different characteristics of each type of mushroom to know if they are edible and if they can eat them at home.
Finally, they have also discovered that the mushroom that we can see on the ground or on tree trunks is only the visible part of the fungus, as the longest part is beneath the soil, and it can measure more than one kilometre!
As we are in autumn, now is your turn to go to the countryside and discover the different mushrooms!!
