Language Games in the classroom

Educational games are games explicitly designed with educational purposes, or which have incidental or secondary educational value. This kind of game is used to help children to learn about certain subjects or expand concepts. Incorporating fun classroom games into lessons is a fantastic way to motivate the students and encourage them to develop their creativity and imagination.

Some of the benefits of playing games in the classroom are:

•    Motivation: Playing games in the classroom provides self motivation for the students.
•    Decrease stress: Students can forget about their stress while playing games.
•    Team work: Through playing games, children learn the importance of helping each other and working together.
•    Memory: Games can increase memory because while they are playing, they need to remember important details about the topic.

Teachers can use games to warm up the class before the lesson begins, during the lesson to give them a break or at the end of class as a prize for having worked hard.

There are many different kinds of games to play in the classroom, but some of the most common games for learning English in primary are: Simon Says, Charades, Hangman, Pictionary, Bingo or Seven-Up.

Games are a wonderful way to get children motivated and learn vocabulary, grammar or pronunciation. You can use Simon Says to learn the parts of the body or to copy actions. Simon Says and Charades are both great for reviewing vocabulary and breaking out of the routine of sitting at a desk. The traditional but interactive Hangman improves students´ spelling and it can be used to acquire vocabulary. Pictionary encourages children to be creative and put their art skills to practice by drawing the vocabulary words. Bingo is a quick and simple game that can be used to work grammar or vocabulary while fine tuning the children’s listening skills. Finally, Seven-Up is a great game to use to calm the class down at the end of a lesson while speaking in English.

Because games are one of the most useful resources to teach English as second language and as Diane Ackeman said “Play is our brain´s favourite way of learning”.
