Things you didn’t know were Spanish inventions

In no particular order, below are four of the best Spanish inventions.

1-    The gyroplane

The autogyro or gyroplane was invented by Spanish engineer Juan de la Cierva in an attempt to create an aircraft that could fly safely at low speeds. Cierva's autogyro is considered the predecessor of the modern helicopter.

2-    The submarine

This watercraft was created by the Murcian engineer Isaac Peral who revolutionized underwater navigation by designing a submersible vessel powered by electricity. Many of Spanish submarines carry the Murcian engineer’s name.

3-    The digital calculator

The Spanish civil engineer and mathematician Leonardo Torres y Quevedo created the first digital calculator around 1914.

4-    The spacesuit

Emilio Herrera Linares invented the spacesuit in 1935, called the “escafrandra estratonáutica” and originally designed for high altitude balloon flights.
