One of my favourite projects to do with the Year 5 kids towards the end of the school year is to divide them into groups and get them to invent a totally new product that doesn´t exist on the market. There are three parts to this project:

1. They must draw a poster to advertise the product
2. They will do a ´"T.V. ad" in front of the other groups to market it.
3. They have to talk about their product and explain any "science" behind it, answering any questions that the other groups or the teacher might pose.

I love how multi-faceted this project is, how it engages almost every kid in the class as it appeals to so many different skills…marketing, drawing, business strategy, acting, script-writing, science and creative thinking. It's an opportunity to showcase a multitude of abilities, especially for those children who find English can be a bit challenging.  Often, the kids are so interested that they do extra work at break-time or meet up at the weekends.

Some of the inventions from this year were a "Future House" with all the latest technology, a "smartchip" device that inserts by the ear under the skin and allows the user to access technology in a totally private way, a "Stop App" which immediately switches off the user's phone when approaching a zebra crossing, therefore preventing car accidents, and a space drone.  Have a look at some of the amazingly creative inventions that our kids came up with, and their often funny, engaging "TV" ads to market them.
