This is the moment we have long been waiting for all through the year: our so much sought after Summer Holidays. The kids have finished their classes, we can have some days off -perhaps some weeks- from work, the temperature is rising which makes it  the perfect excuse to take some days rest,…

But it is not just that. It is not the same as every year, to jump off the busy train of life and plan some days, away from alarm clocks, routines, pressures,…It is the need, the `call´ from deep inside us ,that demands a break, sitting on a deck chair , facing the sea, letting our eyes wander vacantly upon whatever happens to be there at that moment of pure intimacy. A moment of Silence.

They name it “Stress” and it is considered a serious condition that affects all of us at some point -if not `always´, in many cases- of our lives. They know it is a “Pandemic” and it is considered the number one mental disorder affecting our society.

There might be many definitions for this modern affliction but I wanted to focus on the idea of our inability of being in touch with the present time whilst our mind wanders and dwells both in the past and the future. The future and the past are full or worries, anxieties, uncertainties that our mind cannot -or will not- detach itself from. Those  bygones and/or expectations that form part of our congested brains `give´us a more solid terrain on which to tread than a mere realization of the `present moment´. The present has no `charge´, no `weight´. It gives the owner no option to take pleasure in. It is just Silence. A neutral experience of `Now´.

However we need it. We crave for it. We know that there is no more delaying it for any near future.I cannot take off my mind that song by “Depeche Mode”, Enjoy the Silence, not the theme but more specifically  what the title suggest the mind and the photograph that accompanied the song: a man triumphant ,sitting on a deck chair on top a high mountain facing the  frozen immensity ahead of him , infinite snowed peaks ,while he seems to be enjoining the moment, the Silence.

Whether this Silence is `mental´ or not , this is definitely the moment so many of us were longing for. Let us take those days -the more the better- find your perfect spot and unfold your favorite deck chair. Let us be surrounded by that so much dreamt atmosphere of tranquility and…let the Silence sweep over you. Enjoy your Silence
