At Luyfe we are bringing technology into our Arts and Crafts classes. The students are using the Sketchbook App on their iPads to create digital art. In today’s fast paced, high-tech world the way that art is both created and enjoyed by viewers is changing, and at Luyfe we believe that the way we teach our students must reflect this change.

We can look to the creations of Daniel Canogar (Madrid, 1964) who is only one of thousands of digital artists to see how important digital art is becoming. We have been able to see the digitalization of artworks by names such as Van Gogh or Klimt in MAD (Madrid Artes Digitales). Animated films and shorts are now done digitally in 3D. Books and comics are often illustrated using digital drawings. And we want our students to begin to be comfortable creating art in the digital medium to keep up with the times.

In Year 6, the students had to create their own version of the panda bear we sent them. For this first project we have been focusing on the importance of using new layers for new colours, the effect of changing which layer is on top, blending colours and how to select a colour from a sample. We have shown them the huge variety of tools available for drawing, painting, colouring and adding texture to their pictures, and then we have given them the freedom to experiment and play around with all the different options. Many students have similar programs on their tablets at home and have very quickly become experts using Sketchbook and are helping their peers to do the same. The students have been really motivated by this project and we are very happy with the results.
