Improving your writing: the content

Most of you probably think it is much easier to speak than to write when it comes to COMMUNICATING IDEAS. Actually, have you ever been at a loss as to how to start to writing.

Imagine, we have to tell a story many times. In the end we would be able to explain the story using clearer and more concise ideas and it would be much better organized than at the beginning. This is because, as we repeat the story time after time ,we are continually improving the ideas which we have adapted to get the intended message across. However, when we talk to a group of people, we lose this great opportunity.

We communicate ideas not only when we are speaking but also when we are writing but this time, with the advantage of repeating the story as many times as we wish. Therefore, why don’t you start writing everything which comes to mind? When you finish, you will only have to repeat the same content but organising all of these ideas and leaving out what is not relevant. 

We are usually asked to write about a particular thing which makes things easier as this establishes the purpose of the writing. Below, you have some useful tips to lose that all too common fear of writing :

•    First of all, we have to consider every idea which answers what we have been asked.
•    We start writing everything which comes to mind (brainstorming) taking into account what the reader needs to know.
•    When we have finished, we will have to repeat the task but this time keeping the relevant ideas and leaving out those ideas which are irrelevant. 
•    Now it comes the moment when we have to improve all these ideas so we can grab the reader’s attention. It is therefore necessary to use KEY SENTENCES in which our ideas will be contained. These key sentences will be the TOPIC SENTENCE.

There will be as many paragraphs as different ideas are put forward. The TOPIC SENTENCE will be written at the beginning of the paragraph and will tell the reader what the paragraph will be about. The rest of the sentences will explain the topic sentence.

Remember to use linkers to connect these ideas. Once we have finished, the writing should be read to correct mistakes and REMEMBER NOT TO BEAT AROUND THE BUSH.
