Her name was Miss Rivett. She was the teacher in charge of the 5th grade class.

Every day she began the class saying that she loved all her students in the same way. But it was not true. Ryan was her favourite.

Ryan took Miss Rivett’s attention from the very first day; he did not play with the rest of his friends, and he was always dirty and wearing sloppy clothes. And what is more, even if he was one of the most successful students in previous years, recently he had never passed any of his exams.

When Miss Rivett went through Ryan’s academic files, she discovered that his mum had died after a long illness. And from that day on, she felt her job had not been enough to help Ryan; that is why she dedicated extra time, not only to teach him Maths or History, but also values. And Ryan felt so happy that one day he gave Miss Rivett a special present wrapped inside a crumpled paper: a bracelet that had belonged to his mum. “You are so similar to her, Miss Rivett”, Ryan said.

After some years of hard work, Ryan got excellent marks. And in a few years, he would graduate,
Time passed by, and Ryan went to the University. He was a doctor now. And all these years he had kept in touch with Miss Rivett, telling her again and again that she had been his best teacher, the only one who had really cared for him.

In one of the last letters that Miss Rivett received, Ryan said that he had met a girl and they were engaged. The wedding was going to take place in few months and Ryan wanted Miss Rivett to attend. Of course, Miss Rivett accepted, wearing the bracelet Ryan had given her years before.

When they met, they both broke into tears. “Thanks, Miss Rivett, because you cared beyond limits and made me feel important”. And still in tears, she answered: “Dear Ryan, you are wrong! You were the one who taught me how to make the difference. I didn’t know how to teach until I met you.”

So, wherever we may go, let’s make the difference. Let’s care beyond limits.
