Why Take the Cambridge Exams?

The logic of the taking the early Cambridge exams at LUYFERIVAS or elsewhere is a question we are oft asked by parents. “Shouldn’t we just wait and have my child sit the First Certificate without the primary or key exams?”

The curt and emphatic answer is no, you should not. Firstly, the Cambridge certificates are essentially markers which confirm whether or not a preordained level of English has been reached by the candidate. The latter stages of the process, that is to say, the C1 and, where relevant, the C2, are of course the most sought after certificates and rightly so. They confirm a high level of competency in the English language and can be the difference between getting that job or not.

But that is a battle for another day.

Right now, your child is taking their first steps on this journey. The exam experience in Starters, Movers and in particular KET is absolutely invaluable and is just as tightly controlled as the latter stage examinations. Each is a rung on a ladder intended to carry your child to the very top of their potential with the English language, and having the documentation to prove it.

Like all ladders, each rung must be used to reach the summit, and while it is possible to climb whilst skipping a foot mount or two, it is not advisable. Imagine a talented footballer thrust into the first team having never learned the basics and proven that he had mastered them first? We can apply the same logic here.

It is our firm belief that each step of the Cambridge ladder should be utilized to maximize success through exam time experience, the confidence boost from overcoming each hurdle as it comes and the compliment it provides to curricular English. It’s a no-brainer.
