In YLE, our first grade students usually do a role-play once a week.
This is a fun and motivational activity for children, who generally enjoy all forms of play. It is an activity they enjoy while improving their English, vocabulary and pronunciation.

The text is related to the vocabulary of the unit we are dealing with, so it serves to strengthen vocabulary. The role-play also simulates situations from real life, therefore the language used is meaningful. With this acting we bring into the classroom a variety of situations from everyday life, and it helps pupils learn to communicate in different contexts.

Each student is a different character and they usually do the acting in pairs, groups of three or four, which gives all the students the opportunity to participate in the activity.

The first few times we did this in class, shy students did not want to participate, but now it has become an activity they love and which everyone is very motivated to participate in.

Pupils act out the role-play in front of the class, thus encouraging public speaking.  The rest of the classmates have to respect the actors and be quiet, pretending that we are in a real theatre.

The last role-play we did was about clothes. In this way students had fun while consolidating their knowledge.
