Hispanic Day (Día de la Hispanidad) or National Day (Fiesta Nacional de España) is an annual national public holiday in Spain on October, 12th. It commemorates when Christopher Columbus first set foot in the Americas, in 1492. He was credited for ‘discovering’ America, but there were already people living in America at that time!

Today, the aim is not learning those facts we can find in any textbook. We are going to analyze a painting related with that important event, called ‘First landing of Christopher Columbus in America’ (1862) by Dióscoro Teófilo de la Puebla Tolín (1831-1901).

This painting depicts Christopher Columbus and members of his crew on a beach in the West Indies, newly landed from his flagship Santa María on October 12th, 1492. There are naked savages cower in fear of the noble explorers who have arrived bearing symbols of religious and national pride. The central figure of Christopher Columbus looks heavenwards while striking his sword on the ground. It also shows former desperate sailors kissing the earth, illuminated by the divine light from above. All is well positioned according to their importance.

The painter’s work is an excellent example of patriotism, religious zeal and glory from the Spaniards for such an important historical event.

As you can see, we can learn not just from books, but also from paintings, which express a lot of information we cannot read, but we can see and interpret: how society was at that time, the way they dressed, etc.
